Holography is the science of photographing an image using laser light. The Holographic image reappears with amazing clarity when seen under another laser light. Surface defects have no effect on the holographic image, nor can the image be altered. This intrinsic integrity satisfies all audit criteria for reliable information retention. Meanwhile, they can be accessed just as easily as any hard drive.
Small, Holographic data storage cassettes remain unchanged for half a century or more. This archive persistence is required by many government and industry regulations. Holographic storage allows audit records, municipal records and legal documents to be preserved intact for at least half a century even when kept under non-archival conditions. Standard ageing tests show Holographic media remaining readable in excess of 50 years and also withstanding high temperatures, dust, and total immersion in water.
